The Ignition Point: what's in a name?

[November 30, 2006]

A name is an important thing. It can define who you are… what you stand for… what you do… where you have been… where you are going.

For Courtenay and me, it was easy to understand that we were called to the nations, that worship and the arts were our tools, and that our message would be one of passion and fervency for the Lord. However, finding a name that defined our ministry goal was a little more difficult. I guess we could have called it “Living lives of passionate worship for Jesus forever ministry”… but it seemed a little long!! Instead, we decided to consider what impact we wanted to have through our ministry endeavors.

My thoughts traveled to when I was younger. I remember going to youth camps and on youth missions every year with my youth group. Those were always powerful experiences. I would return home full of passion for the Lord. Then a few days or weeks would pass, and my once fiery passion would begin to cool. This same thing would happen to all of my friends. Our passion for the Lord would continue to diminish until the next experience – where it would be revived once again.

After an experience with God, it was as if I was on top of a mountain. When the experience was over and I returned to life as usual, I was unable to sustain what God had done in my life and quickly began to descend down the mountain. I would end up back in the same place that I started – totally reliant on the next “experience with God”… the next service… the next conference, but without His presence in my every-day life.

For me, it wasn’t until I caught a glimpse of my destiny that things began to change. I realized that achieving what God had as my purpose was not something that I could accomplish on my own – apart from God. Instead, it would be because of his presence, grace, mercy and undeserved love. (Titus 3:4-7).  I also realized that staying in His presence was up to me, not my church, my leaders, the next worship conference or revival service. They could set the example, but it was up to me to follow. If I knocked, He would open the door. If I asked, I would receive. If I sought Him, I would find Him. It requires our effort which is then met by His grace and mercy!

To me, this moment of transition is an ignition point. A point where we are no longer just sitting on the launch pad receiving maintenance, but launched into living effective lives for God and walking with Him daily. This is the point at which the reality of God and His love becomes undeniable… and we can begin to live in His reality and pursue our destiny in Christ with confidence and authority in who He is and who He has made us to be - mighty men and women of God who can change the world as we love and worship Him with our entire lives.

So, if you have seen the name “The Ignition Point” on our CDs, posters or website, now you know what it stands for!!
